Hmmm ... doesn't match any of the films I remember seeing in the `80s : Time Bandits, Brazil , The Princess Bride, Nausicaä, Wings of Honneamise, Splash, Flash Gordon, Blade Runner, Dark Crystal, the Dirty Pair series.
Guess you just have to see some other 80s movies, Revenge of the Nerds just to name one. Now as it's a PARODY, should have been a clue that they were cheesy movies.
I was more comparing my experience vs the more common one, a lot of people would see the references.
True, it is a parody, but if you don't know the material being parodied then it's likely the parody will seem to be lacking in something. If you never have heard of Lord of the Rings, then Bored of the Rings will be a lot less funny, same goes for The Shining and Shining
I know people who did go to those other movies, and would get this short. Alas, my movie going experiences were somewhat deficient; as the short had no dwarfs, evil emperors, or crime stopping girls in bikinis, I was hopelessly lost and confused 8-)
