Although wearing the leg/knee brace does make it easier to get around, sort of, the muscles in the leg get weak, as the brace is doing all the work.

Today, I went for short sortie into the local mall, using just my cane. I meandered in one of the stores, picking up a few things, for about 20 minutes. I will admit, I was ready to collapse into a chair when we got back. Left leg isn't too sore, but feels very weak.

Oh yeah, I get to do it again tomorrow! Might end up using the cuff crutches, as tomorrow's usuall routine include more than a hour worth of walking.

Rest of my left side still stiff and sore from the fall I took a few days ago.

But a failure to understand.

Yes, Mr S and Simon the Sadist said my left knee was BETTER than it was the previous week. Wing took that to mean all better, and without even asking me about it, or thinking on his part, had me standing on a hard floor, no walking around, for over an hour. By the time we got home, I was hurting. I took off my 'above the knee to just below the knee' brace, and put the thigh to ankle one on.

One would think that would've been a big clue, that and the fact I couldn't sleep because of the pain. But no. I gave him my script for medication, asking him to get it. He says ok, and I take that to mean he will be heading out himself. Again, but no! He pops his head into my office and doesn't ask, but tells me in his passive aggressive way that we were heading out in 30 minutes. He pops into the shower. So while he's getting cleaned up, I go through the struggle of getting socks, shoes, brace tube, and brace on, and then he said "You know, if it's so much trouble...." AFTER I had gone through the hardest part of getting ready.

I am not in the slightest homicidal, but if I had a NERF cricket bat, I might have used it a few times. Ok, I would look at it and fantasize about using it a few times.

I tried one of those knit compression sleeves with the silicone strip that is supposed to keep it from slipping? Well, it doesn't. So, I tried using it under the old "Big Bionic Bertha" hinged knee brace. I had some success, but... I started getting a rash from the silicone strip.

*sigh*

LIGHTBULB! Turned the sleeve inside out, THEN put BBB over it. Successful.... but, it made ummm (thinking of delicate way to put this) it made shifting clothing out of the way for bodily functions difficult. I really don't want to have to schedule toilet breaks.

Let my fingers do the walking, and with review sites, questions asked, products examined, what I bought was a scaled down version of BBB., so I won't need the silicone sleeve under it, and the hinges won't catch on clothes (or doorways if I cut my corners too close)

For our 19 year old refrigerator. Luckily I noticed it before everything in the freezer thawed. It was the the small turkey I got last weekend that was frozen that kept most of what was in the freezer frozen.

Measured the how wide and deep the now dead fridge was, then headed out to Fridge and Washer City. This time, I was in the market for one with the freezer on the bottom. Armed with measuring tape, and reading labels, I selected on that was exactly what I wanted. I asked if it could be delivered today, as I had insulin and other medications in need of refrigeration (I put them in a small insulated lunch box, with some semi thawed ice packs to keep them cool). Was told it could be, and they would take the old one. Worked for me! Made the credit card temporarily smoke by paying for it.

Alan and I went home, and started offloading what was in the freezer into an 'esky' aka cooler. We packed everything we could around the turkey. Then we went to the fridge. Yuck. The smell of things that went off combined to create a really nasty smell. While we were cleaning that out, the new fridge arrived. We weren't done yet, so we busted out butts getting everything out, sorted, packed or tossed.

Talk about an intense 30 minute work out! I am sore... Tramadol sore. This is the first time in months Wing said he would cook tonight. Gawd, I Love that man. He's also bringing home some 3M sticky tabs so we can re-hang the cooking utensils on the side of the fridge.I have needed the prescription pain meds.

Did I mention I was sore? Oh yeah, I did.

Onward...

Matt the physio has recommended I not use crutches, unless heading somewhere there is a lot of people, then use both of them as a visual cue to people that there is a reason I am walking slowly. He told me I have to learn to trust the new knee. I have to break myself of the habit of leaning towards the left, and start putting equal weight on the right leg. Wing and I went for a bit of a walk at the pet store, and the shops. And I'm "Post Physio Visit" sore as usual. Should pass in a day or so.

Also showed him my right hand, the one I fell on when I was in Denmark two years ago. After examining it, he said I had sustained a scaphoid fracture. The only thing that could've been done for it, was what I did for it. Wear a wrist brace to limit movement.

I see Mr Skinner next week for my 12 week post op check up.

Standing around, not walking, makes my knee very painful the next day, more painful than if I had been walking around the same amount of time.

Wing and I headed into Camera Electronic, and got my birthday present. We were in the store a little over an hour, most of the time just standing in place.

It might not have been so bad if I hadn't been standing around stalking baby Red Wattlebirds in the morning, then doing the same thing again later in the afternoon after cleaning and refilling the hummingbird feeders for the local necatarvores.

Then, I forgot to take anti-inflammatory/pain meds before going to bed. Up at 4am with very sore knee. Lesson learned.

Just to the shops to pick up a few items, then off to the pet store to get some grain free food for Keito. Wing went to the fish monger to get supplies for tonight.

I pit-stopped in K-Mart to pick up some cheapish leggings to wear. I have been wearing the hinged knee brace under my pants mostly to keep it out of sight, but the back of my leg itched like crazy. Wearing the brace over the leggings stops the itching and, as a bonus, seems to make people a bit more tolerant/sympathetic as to why I am walking slowing.

Knee still aches, but nothing like it did two days ago. That can be chalked up to 50mls of fluid drained, and pain killers. Don't think the SYNVISC has started working in just two days.

Still feel very tired, though. I zonked out reclining in my chair.

I went to see Dr S as scheduled to see about my knee. It was still swollen, even with the anti-inflammatory. I told Dr S wanted to go with the SYNVISC asap. He told me it takes a week for it to arrived, and he was scheduled to be elsewhere in a week. I asked if the company that makes SYNVISC has express shipping, but they don't. Dr S said they had one treatment at the practice (one is all that is needed) and I asked "Can I call and have them ship you a replacement and we get this done today?"

The answer was yes. Called and ordered it, and had shipping address as Dr S.

Then it came time for me to get it injected into my knee. Swab the knee, inject local anesthetic deep in. Before the needle was taken out, a syringe was used to drain almost 25ml of seroma like fluid from the knee. No wonder if felt like I had a sponge in the joint. Too much 'hydrolic fluid'.

Synvisc injected, barely felt a thing. Here's hoping that I am in the 80% success rate section. (Then I had a day of blessed NO pain in my knee for most of the day.)

Then off to see Hadyn. Told him about how my right calf was stiff. Too many 'dip heels below stair level, then go up onto toes'. He really worked the huge knot I had in it. The he saw my flexor and glutes were locked/stiff, and he REALLY worked on that. Umm ow? I have said before, and I say again, that physiotherapists have to be a touch sadistic.

Knee was kicking up a fuss yesterday. I tried to take it easy, not walk too fast, or do too many deep knee bending things, but none of that helped.

Going to bed last night, it didn't matter what position I put my leg in, even the tried in true to 'relieve joint stress' position, just didn't help, so I resorted to "Better living through chemistry". The LOWER dosage variety.

I managed to sleep, but feel a bit fuzzy headed, as is usual with pain medications. Knee is a bit swollen today, too. Have compression bandage on it for now, and will switch to the "Device of Torturous Comfort" aka mid-thigh to calf knee brace when there is a reduction in the swelling.
anysia: (WTF??!!)
Last Friday, I had a ruptured epidermoid cyst bigger than a golf ball removed from my back, over the shoulderblade. The follow up care/treatment was rather painful but necessary. My left arm has been rather useless as any movement hurts. I've had it in a sling to reduce the shock of impact when just walking.

Yesterday, I went back for another follow up (the not so fun treatment was at an end) and the doctor said all is healing quite well, although it was still (in his words) "a mighty big hole". It was filled with a biogel that allows the wound to heal from the deepest part up, like a zipper and put a clear waterproof dressing over it. (look out shower! Here I come! No more basin baths. YAY!)

This morning, after daintily stepping around me since Friday, Loki decided to fall back on his old method of getting human up. And of all the square feet of my, he managed to jump right on/near the surgical site.

Hurt like #%#$!@$#&. Arm back in sling. Checked wound, and it's ok, didn't breech the dressing or cause damage.
